Xi'an, an eternal city, records the great changes of the Chinese nation like a living history book. Xi'an, known as Chang'an in ancient times, is one of the birthplaces of ancient civilization in the Yellow River Basin region of the country.
Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi Province, located in the south of the Guanzhong Plain. Bordering the Qinling Mountains in the south and the Weihe River in the north, it enjoys a strategic location and is surrounded by mountains and rivers. The monsoon climate is semi-humid and there are obvious differences between the four seasons.
Xi'an, together with Athens, Cairo and Rome, is the world's four major ancient civilization capitals. Xi'an lies on the natural West Coast route out of China into Central Asia, the beginning and end of the Silk Road, which brought more than a thousand years of material wealth and religious and cultural fusion to the city. Tourism has become an important part of the local economy, and Xi'an is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China, based on the many historical monuments and monuments nearby.
The Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum is known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World", Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum is listed as a World Heritage Site, and the Ming Dynasty City Wall is listed as a World Heritage Site. The largest and most complete Ming Dynasty castle in the world. Tourists flock to Xi'an every year to visit some of China's most important historical and cultural sites. Arguably Xi'an's most famous attraction, the Terracotta Warriors are a collection of ancient, life-size generals, officers, infantry, archers and cavalry, each statue unique. The city wall was originally built during the Tang Dynasty in 618 AD and is another great place to visit. Popular activities among tourists and locals alike are walking, running or even cycling on the walls at night while admiring the city lights. Near Xi'an, Famen Temple is known as the "ancestor of pagodas and temples in central Shaanxi" because it contains the finger bones of Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The natural landscape surrounding Xi'an is also marvelous with Mount Huashan, one of China's five famous mountains, known for its breathtaking cliffs and unique features.
Another historical treasure is the Bell and Drum Tower located in the heart of the city. Originally a way to tell the time (as they were struck at dawn and dusk) and also provide a great view of the city. Bell Tower is the geographical center of Xi'an. The four main streets are East Street, West Street, South Street and North Street, which are also the main commercial streets. Xiaozhai, the busiest commercial district is located in the south of the city and is popular with young people and students due to the many universities located here.
Known as the "City of Table Food", Xi'an is home to rich Shaanxi snacks, exquisite Cantonese cuisine, various fashionable foreign cuisines, and popular Sichuan cuisine such as hot pot. Among all the delicacies, the most famous and popular is the Muslim snack street. For those looking to stay overnight and experience some Chinese culture, the Tang Dynasty Dinner Show is a must. Performances include dancing, acrobatics, singing and exquisite local cuisine. The fountain show next to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is another exciting event on a warm summer night. All in all, any experience in this ancient city will be fun and maybe even a little surprising!
If China is a big tree, then Beijing will be the crown and Xi'an will be its deep roots. As the saying goes: "Go to Shanghai and you will find a China with a history of 100 years; go to Beijing and you will find a China with a history of 1,000 years; go to Xi'an and you will find a China with a history of 3,000 years." Anyway, Xi'an is the cradle of China and should be on your China travel bucket list.
